In the past few weeks my students have learned to analyze and apply various fiction & nonfiction reading strategies. This week, we really began to compare the differences in fiction and nonfiction. We read two of my favorite "pumpkin" books!
After reading The Pumpkin Book by Gail Gibbons, we completed this life cycle book...
My students were fascinated with the fact that there are male and female pumpkin flowers... so, we used our reading journals to compare the diagrams in the story.
We also used our reading journals to compare the fiction & nonfiction story...
This week, we have also been exploring nouns, verbs, & adjectives! My students created their own person, place, & thing as we reviewed nouns. I got this adorable activity from reading Step into 2nd Grade with Mrs. Lemons! I love all of Amy's ideas!
We also worked in groups to sort nouns, verbs & adjectives!
My kiddos love working in groups! In math, we have been working on number patterns & equations. We completed this FUN equation sort! I love listening as my students use math vocabulary & problem solving skills!
The highlight of our week was our pumpkin tasting on Friday!
We created a graph to record our favorite treats!
And... we have more pumpkin activities planned for next week! This is what we're going to be doing...
BME Pumpkin hats...
More interactive journal pages... My students will be completing some of these activities during guided reading groups!
We will also be taking a piece through the writing process to create our first narratives! We're going to be writing about the pumpkin that grew legs and began to talk!
