Kevin Henkes Author Study Day 2 {Sheila Rae, The Brave}

Today was day 2 of our Kevin Henkes author study! Here's a little look....

We began by reviewing our "good reading strategies" anchor chart. We discussed the importance of "painting pictures in our minds" and added that good readers create mental images.
Next, I read the story without showing any of the pictures.  I stopped reading when Sheila Rae was lost and sat on a rock and cried.  I then had my students draw their visual images.

Supporting the drawing with evidence from the text was a little hard, so we created this anchor chart.
After rereading the story and seeing the pictures we completed a few comprehension questions... You can find these questions here. Then, we made this cutie patootie Sheila Rae.

Of course, we had to add Sheila Rae to our bulletin board!!!

I hope your first week is going as good as mine! You can find all of these activities, sheets, and patterns in my Kevin Henkes Author Study Unit at my TpT store!
